On July 7th, Dr. Abigael Okoko participated in the DSA 2022 conference panel on Understanding the Lived Experience of Energy Poverty in The Global North and South, by presenting and discussing the paper, Are mini grids a solution to energy poverty? A case of mini-grids in Kenya.
The panel aimed to inspire conversations that would broaden the understanding of lived experiences of energy poverty in different contexts with a focus on the Global North and South by exploring the methods used to identify energy-poor households and characterise those most vulnerable to energy poverty. This would subsequently invoke discussions on appropriate practices for supporting energy-poor households across regions.
The abstract paper was thus relevant as it examined economic sustainability of mini grids which was achieved by collecting household data across different geographical contexts in Kenya with the aim of presenting an evidence-based analysis of mini-grids in Kenya.
This will contribute to the discourse on the mini grid sector and the development of policy frameworks focused on governing mini grids in Kenya even as we aim to achieve universal access to sustainable modern energy as envisioned by the Sustainable Development Goal 7.
