Technical Dialogue on Early and Responsible Direct Air Capture in Kenya

On 4 September 2026, the DACStorE Project, in collaboration with GIZ Kenya, Octavia Carbon, and Nuvoni Centre for Innovation Research, will convene a high-level technical dialogue in Nairobi on responsible Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACS) deployment in Kenya. As the first country in the Global South to host two operational DACS projects, Kenya offers a unique opportunity to examine the enabling conditions, safeguards, and governance arrangements needed for scaling carbon removal technologies. The dialogue brings together 30–50 participants, including government representatives, researchers, community members, civil society, and technology developers, to discuss cutting-edge research on DACS technology, infrastructure, costs, and siting; explore the socio-economic opportunities and risks for Kenya and Africa; examine policy and governance frameworks; and address questions of social acceptance and equitable benefit distribution. Through a structured programme of research presentations, panel discussions, community testimony, and breakout sessions, the dialogue aims to generate practical recommendations for responsible DACS deployment that balances climate action with local development priorities.
