2025 Annual Progress Report

A defining feature of this year has been our continued shift toward research that is closely engaged with policy and practice. From our work on electricity access in informal settlements and the political economy of biomass cooking to emerging research on carbon dioxide removal and urban climate resilience, we are increasingly providing evidence that informs decisionmaking at local, national, and regional levels. At the same time, we have strengthened our role in capacity development, working with policymakers, e.g. through the urban resilience masterclass, strengthening the capacities of community researchers across East Africa, and supporting students through the LEARN Master’s Thesis Lab and student minor programmes. We are working to ensure that knowledge is not only produced through research but also understood and applied,
